The month-before-a-deadline checklist
A concrete four-week countdown you can run for any application — research, scholarship, fellowship, competition. Boring, effective, and hard to mess up.
01Four weeks out
Read the official page twice. Copy every prompt into a document, with word counts.
Confirm every eligibility line. Grade, citizenship, location, income cutoffs. If you're borderline, email the program and ask — don't self-reject.
Ask your recommenders. Send them the packet: program name, deadline in bold, submission link, your CV, and a short brag sheet.
02Three weeks out
First full essay draft. Ugly, long, honest. Don't edit yet — just get it on the page.
Gather the boring assets: transcript, test scores if required, a clean CV export, headshots if asked. Anything you have to request from a third party, request now.
03Two weeks out
Give a draft to one outside reader — a teacher, a family friend, an older student. Ask them: 'What am I actually saying here?'
Cut 20% of your essay. It will get better. Almost every first draft is 20% too long.
04One week out
Final read-through, out loud, on paper if you can. You'll catch things your eye skims on a screen.
Confirm your recommenders are on track. A polite nudge is welcome; a panicked one is not.
Fill out the online portal, save every field, and hit submit at least 24 hours early. Then close the tab and go do something else.
