Who we are

Atlas of Opportunity is a student-led nonprofit based in Bothell, Washington. We operate this website (the "Site") to help under-resourced high schoolers discover free and funded research programs. Questions: hello@atlasofopportunity.org.

What we collect

  • Account info (only if you sign in): your email address and a display name, handled by our authentication provider.
  • Submissions you choose to send us: program suggestions, corrections, saved opportunities, application-tracker entries, and email-list signups.
  • Basic request data: IP address, user agent, and pages visited, used for security and aggregated analytics. We do not sell or share this data.

What we do not collect

We do not collect Social Security numbers, financial information, transcripts, or any data about your race, ethnicity, household income, or immigration status. We never ask for payment.

How we use it

  • To show you saved programs and your application tracker.
  • To send you opportunity emails if you opted in (you can unsubscribe at any time).
  • To review program suggestions and corrections from contributors.
  • To understand aggregate usage and improve the Site.

Who we share it with

We share data only with the service providers required to run the Site (our database and authentication host, our email-delivery provider, and our analytics). We do not sell, rent, or trade your information.

Cookies & analytics

  • Essential cookies only. We set a session cookie required for sign-in and a small amount of localStorage to remember saved programs, tracker entries, and your last-visited timestamp on your own device.
  • No advertising trackers. No Google Analytics, no Meta Pixel, no third-party ad networks.
  • Aggregate counts. We keep anonymous server-side request counts to monitor uptime and rate limits. These contain no advertising identifiers and are never shared with third parties.
  • Privacy-friendly page analytics (optional). When enabled by the operator, we use Plausible Analytics, which is cookieless, does not track individuals across sites, and is GDPR/CCPA-compliant by design. It records only aggregate page-view counts and referrers. If the operator hasn't configured it, no analytics script loads at all.
  • Embeds. If you load our finder/closing-soon embeds on another site, the same rules apply — no third-party tracking.
  • You can clear local data at any time from your browser, or permanently delete your account from the Dashboard.

Minors

Our audience is high-school students. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has submitted data, email us and we will delete it.

Data retention

  • Account & saved items: retained until you delete your account. You can permanently delete your account and all linked data from the Dashboard → Delete my account at any time.
  • Newsletter signups: retained until you unsubscribe; we keep a one-way hash of unsubscribed addresses to prevent re-subscription abuse.
  • Suggestions & corrections: kept indefinitely as part of our public editorial record, but contact info is stripped from public views.
  • Admin audit log: 180 days, then automatically pruned.
  • Link-check & aggregate visit counts: kept indefinitely; they contain no personal identifiers.

Your rights

You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your data at any time by emailing hello@atlasofopportunity.org, or instantly from the Dashboard → Delete my account. We will respond to email requests within 30 days.

Changes

If we materially change this policy we will update the "Last updated" date and, where possible, notify subscribed users by email.
